Designing apps for tablets: consider time of day

The Read It Later team published data indicating reading on tablets has dramatically different consumption patterns than on mobile phones or laptops. Reading occurs throughout the day on the computers, and is quite similar to mobile phones.

However, readers predominantly read on tablets after dinner.

Designing a tablet app means:

  • competing or collaborating with prime time television
  • usage patterns with a significant amount of breaks in sessions, that are soon resumed
  • often the last chance to message a reader before bed (maybe a great opportunity for subliminal advertising)

It’s important to consider the time a user will be using an application. Are there other implications of late night tablet use for apps?
